Release: 2018 | www.dli.mn.go

The Minnesota Department of Labor urgently needed a website redesign. The existing design was not only outdated but also had significant issues with navigation, consistency, and accessibility that required immediate attention. They needed a scalable design to support growth and ensure navigation consistency. Many users struggled to find what they needed, often calling for assistance or saving links that would eventually change.

I was tasked with the site redesign, working closely with CEO Virgil Carroll to conduct UX workshops—including card sorting, interviews, and surveys—to improve usability, scalability, and ensure a responsive design that met their needs.

The Problem

I was tasked with the site redesign, working closely with CEO Virgil Carroll to conduct UX workshops—including card sorting, interviews, and surveys—to improve usability, scalability, and ensure a responsive design that met their needs.

Design Solution

The design process for DLI began with gathering and analyzing user data from surveys and both internal and external interviews, helping us identify key issues users faced. I led the site redesign, collaborating closely with CEO Virgil Carroll in UX workshops—including card sorting, interviews, and surveys—to improve usability, scalability, and responsive design. After researching live video tools with chat functionality, I created wireframes and worked with developers to prepare for the development process. The final design, complete with pixel-perfect specifications and refined user flows, was then handed off to the development team for implementation. The full process included prototyping, testing, and iterating. Additionally, to meet accessibility requirements, we needed an efficient solution to convert over 45,000 PDFs to a site-compliant, accessible format.
