This Room Permissions

Team: Creative Community

Role: UX, UI

Tools: Rec Room, Unity, Zendesk

Results: we saw a significant decrease in stolen room content, eventually dropping to nearly zero. The remaining tickets primarily involved requests to move or restore subrooms—a pretty great win!

This Room Permissions allow creators to have more control over their room settings, preventing content theft by fellow co-owners and contributors.

The Problem

We wanted to encourage collaboration among creators, but the current environment introduced significant risks when working with both new and experienced creators. Room owners faced the issue of co-owners cloning their rooms and deleting the original ones. This led to moderation stepping in, with the team spending up to 8 minutes per ticket to resolve stolen rooms, which was three times longer than the average ticket resolution time.

Design Solution

By adding additional moderation settings to the current permission system, we provide room owners with a way to limit critical settings that could potentially damage their rooms, especially if the room is performing well and generating revenue. We collaborated with moderation, engineers, and closely worked with creators to determine what needed to be surfaced, what could be surfaced, and where to surface it. While there were other categories we would have liked to include in the "This Room" permissions, some were out of scope, and others involved either new features or redesigns of existing ones. In the new "This Room Permissions," we set the most critical settings to "off" by default, as these were associated with significant moderation issues.

  • Expanded Tube Modifications: Creators can now modify and adjust tubes even after they’ve been created.

  • Improved Usability: Interaction with tubes has been streamlined for both new and experienced creators across all platforms.

  • Node Manipulation: Creators can add and remove nodes at any point, allowing for precise adjustments and easier manipulation of tube shapes post-drawing.

  • Intuitive Transform Tools: Existing transform tools now work seamlessly with tube nodes, maintaining their expected functionality.

  • Advanced Tube Features: Creators can connect both ends of a tube, split a tube into multiple segments, and smooth out tube shapes with additional options like position, rotation, and size adjustments.

  • Enhanced Selection and Interaction: Selecting tubes and nodes is now more predictable, with improved collision detection. Creators can clearly distinguish between interacting with a tube node versus the tube shape itself.

These updates also enable creators to move, rotate, and scale nodes, edit tube shapes, and easily add or remove nodes. I worked closely with developers to implement these changes, ensuring a more intuitive and flexible toolset for creators.

Measure Success

Over time, we saw a significant decrease in stolen room content, eventually dropping to nearly zero. The remaining tickets primarily involved requests to move or restore subrooms—a pretty great win!
